troop letter: The high-tempo operations

The Afghanistan military continue to train
Family and friends,
The weather seems to be changing for the better, since the last couple of days have been warmer than the normal February temperatures. It feels good to travel on a vehicle without the feeling of the frostbite sensation on my face, neck, and fingers. The mountains surrounding us contain the only snow, and they make a wonderful view after a rainy day clears all the dust and pollution.
We continue to make tremendous strides for the stability of Afghanistan. A recent poll taken of local nationals is a testament to the progress: 75% believe the country is in a better place than before 2001, and the same percent think their children will have a greater chance to be more successful in life. The Afghanistan military continue to train side-by-side with our military so they can fulfill the role of self-sustained missions.
The high-tempo operations continue on a daily basis, but our unit was flexible enough to allow me to fly down and compete in a race (Feb 13-16). On Feb 14th, More than 465 military and civilians competed in the 8.5mile Aloha run at Bagram air base. Since my training consisted of distances no greater than 4miles, I was only able to finish 18th overall. Luckily the altitude training at our FOB (7,500ft) allowed me to finish with a respectable 61min21sec.
Our unit has put together two teams to represent the 453rd in the Best Warrior competition at the end of February. The two teams will compete against all the military teams in Afghanistan. Three of us from our FOB were selected, so wish us luck.
Always,
Joseph
